Georgian Fireplace – 18160

An antique Irish 18th century neo-classical marble fireplace of fine quality

The very well sculpted centre tablet depicts the three cupids: the first Cupid was the son of Mercury and Diana, the second of Mercury and Venus, and the third of Mars and Venus. At either side of the centre tablet are frieze panels inlaid with semi-precious coloured marbles, the design being swags of bell-flowers hung from rings. Tall pilasters have graduating flower husks in a frame of Sienna marble, these are below end-blocks carved with single cupids.

From the workshop George, Hill and Author Darley, Dublin.

Circa 1780
