Victorian Marble Fireplace – 19248
Antique Victorian marble fireplace surround and cast iron insert
Made in London at the end of the 19th century, during the aesthetic movement. Three different types of European marble were sourced to produce this fireplace, Belgian Mazy Black, Greek Tinos Green and French Rouge Griotte. While several different marble mason techniques were executed including carving, inlaying, overlaying and engraving. The cast iron insert has very fine castings and as the unusual shape suggests, it was made to accompany the marble surround.
Very few marble fireplaces were made in the Aesthetic style, as it was a very short lived period, making this fireplace quite a rare piece.
English, circa 1880
