Sienna fireplaces – 18150

Pair of 18th century white statuary and sienna marble fireplaces

Each of the fireplaces has a fluted breakfront cornice shelf, with dental decoration above floral corner blocks, sienna frieze panels and a carved centre plaque. The plaque depicts two classical dolphin handled ewers, linked by a chain of laurel leaves circling a paterae. Three quarter Doric statuary columns are capped with egg and dart capitals and have sienna panels to either side. The openings are framed with substantial egg and dart mouldings.

These two fireplaces were originally made in Dublin, No 5 Mercer Street, in the workshops of Irish stone cutters ‘George, Hill and Aurthur Darley’. There centre tablets featuring dolphin-handled ewers is similar to a design published by Sir William Chambers. A fireplace with an identical centre tablet and similar structure was supplied by the Darleys to Bellevue House, Co, Wicklow.

Pairs of high quality 18th century marble fireplaces are extremely rare, these were acquired from an antique dealers personal collection.
