Georgian Marble Mantelpiece – 18144
Irish Georgian Marble Mantelpiece, dating from the middle of the 18th century
The centre plaque is a garland of oak leaves and acorns, exquisitely carved in white Italian Carrara marble. To either side of the plaque, are panels of black and gold, Portoro Nero marble. Portoro marble also flanks the front pilasters and returns into the chimney wall. The scroll corbels are carved on the front with husks, descending into acanthus leaves and on each of the sides ears of wheat sheaf. Egg and dart mouldings frame the opening and also feature on the break fronted cornice shelf.
